Sweden, N,Y. - A man from Hamlin is now charged with DWI and aggravated vehicular homicide in connection to Tuesday night's fatal crash in Sweden.

Route 31, where the deadly accident happened, has a long reputation as a traffic nightmare.

Town Supervisor Kevin Johnson has lived in Sweden his whole life and is well aware of this dangerous stretch of road. He says, even before Tuesday's deadly crash, he was working with the DOT on a solution.

Johnson says crashes down that particular area happen weekly.

“The number of fatal accidents we see on this stretch is troublesome,” said Johnson. “It’s a high-spee d, two lane road with a tremendous amount of traffic and a lot of intersections. It’s terrible. It’s dangerous. You’re taking your life into your hands if you’re trying to cross traffic.”

Tuesday's accident is raising concerns about Route 31, specifically the intersection at the Sweden Walmart.

“I’m telling you, during rush hour, headed eastbound, eastbound in the morning, westbound at night, it is solid. You cannot get out,” said Johnson. “Those who do try to hit a gap are going to get hit. You have cars full of people trying to cross one lane of traffic. Its unavoidably dangerous. It is. It’s the nature.”

And drivers say they see people run red lights there often.

“I’ve seen cars speeding on Route 31 to beat the red light,” said driver Marisol Barreiro. “Sometimes, I’ll wait when the light turns green. I’ll wait a few seconds, and then I’ll take off. I think what's happening is a lot of people are trying to beat the light, to try to not catch the red light.”

Jeremy Buzard says it’s a matter of people not heeding traffic laws. “Pay attention to what you’re doing, and know your surroundings," he said.

The DOT says from 2012 to 2014, there were 100 accidents along Route 31. Nearly half of those happened in the Walmart parking lot. It is still studying the situation and working on a solution.
